(OPEN):
LATE LAST YEAR, NEW LEGISLATION REVIVED EFFORTS TO LEGALIZE GAMBLING IN TEXAS.  WITH LEGISLATORS IN AUSTIN CONTINUING TO DEBATE THE MERITS, "TEXAS ASSOCIATION OF BUSINESS"-PRESIDENT BILL HAMMOND URGES THEM TO GIVE TEXANS THE RIGHT TO VOTE ON CASINO-GAMBLING...

(HAMMOND):
"
TEXANS ARE SPENDING UPWARDS OF TWO-BILLION DOLLARS, EACH YEAR, IN NEIGHBORING STATES.  IT REALLY MAKES NO SENSE FOR THIS MONEY TO CONTINUE TO FLOW ACROSS THE BORDER--WHEN IT COULD BE USED HERE, IN TEXAS, TO PAY FOR OUR SCHOOLS, FIREFIGHTERS, AND POLICE-OFFICERS.  WE'RE MISSING OUT ON A MAJOR ECONOMIC-DEVELOPMENT TOOL FOR THE STATE."

(BRIDGE):
PROPONENTS CONTEND THAT EXPANDED-GAMBLING COULD CONTRIBUTE EIGHT-AND-A-HALF-BILLION DOLLARS IN TOTAL ECONOMIC-ACTIVITY TO THE STATE; GENERATE SIGNIFICANT REVENUE FOR INFRASTRUCTURE, WITHOUT RAISING TAXES; AND CREATE 75-THOUSAND NEW JOBS.  HAMMOND BELIEVES THAT IT'S TIME FOR THE LEGISLATURE TO PUT THE ISSUE ON THE BALLOT...

(HAMMOND):
"THE ECONOMIC-POTENTIAL IS NOTHING TO SNEEZE AT.  EVERY OPINION-POLL SHOWS THAT TEXANS WANT THE CHANCE TO DECIDE THIS ISSUE--AT THE BALLOT-BOX.  REGARDLESS OF WHERE INDIVIDUAL TEXANS STAND ON THE ISSUE, I ENCOURAGE EVERYONE TO CONTACT THEIR STATE-LEGISLATORS--TO LET THEM KNOW THAT WE WANT OUR VOICES TO BE HEARD.
"
