(MCGOWAN):
"NORTH CAROLINA IS UNIQUELY POSITIONED TO ADD THOUSANDS OF JOBS--NOT TO MENTION, INCREASE LOCAL
REVENUE--THROUGH SAFE AND RESPONSIBLE OFFSHORE-ENERGY DEVELOPMENT. UNFORTUNATELY, ALL OF THIS WAS DISREGARDED IN
GOVERNOR COOPER'S ANNOUNCEMENT, LAST WEEK [ON THURSDAY, JULY
20TH]. IT'S DISAPPOINTING THAT HE'S APPEALING TO GROUPS THAT OPPOSE IMPORTANT SCIENTIFIC- AND
GEOLOGICAL-RESEARCH--WHICH IS VITAL TO GOVERNMENT, EDUCATORS, AND BUSINESSES.
INDEED, HE MADE THIS DECISION BEFORE THE NECESSARY RESEARCH CAN BE CONDUCTED, TO BETTER UNDERSTAND OUR OFFSHORE-RESOURCE POTENTIAL.
SEISMIC SURVEYING HAS BEEN SAFELY USED, FOR DECADES--BOTH IN THE UNITED STATES, AND AROUND THE
WORLD--TO LOCATE POTENTIAL NEW SOURCES OF ENERGY, WITH NO KNOWN DETRIMENTAL-IMPACT TO MARINE-ANIMAL POPULATIONS, OR COMMERCIAL FISHING.
THE OIL- AND NATURAL-GAS-INDUSTRY SUPPORTS OVER 140-THOUSAND JOBS, THROUGHOUT NORTH
CAROLINA--AND CONTRIBUTES OVER 12-BILLION DOLLARS TO THE STATE'S ECONOMY, EVERY YEAR.
THE INDUSTRY ALSO HAS A LONG HISTORY OF SAFE OFFSHORE-OPERATIONS--WHICH CAN COEXIST WITH OUR TOURISM- AND FISHING-INDUSTRIES, WHILE PROVIDING MUCH-NEEDED DIVERSITY FOR OUR LOCAL ECONOMIES."
