EVERY YEAR, OVER HALF-A-MILLION AMERICANS HAVE A STROKE.  AND, NEARLY 200-THOUSAND OF THOSE ARE "CRYPTOGENIC"--WHICH MEANS THAT THE CAUSE IS UNDETERMINED.  A NEW INITIATIVE BY THE "AMERICAN HEART ASSOCIATION"/"AMERICAN STROKE ASSOCIATION" MAY HELP.  THAT'S BECAUSE A PRIOR STROKE IS THE NUMBER-ONE RISK-FACTOR FOR A SECOND STROKE.  BUT, IT'S HARD TO PREVENT ANOTHER STROKE--IF YOU DON'T KNOW WHAT CAUSED THE FIRST ONE.  A RECENT SURVEY FOUND THAT THIS CAUSES BOTH FRUSTRATION AND ANXIETY, FOR PATIENTS AND THEIR FAMILIES ALIKE.  THE SAME SURVEY FOUND THAT ONLY 20-PERCENT OF THESE PATIENTS GET "CRYPTOGENIC"-STROKE INFORMATION, WHEN THEY'RE DIAGNOSED.  MANY, INSTEAD, SEEK INFORMATION ON THEIR OWN--EVEN THOUGH IT'S HARD TO FIND ANSWERS.  THIS INITIATIVE PROVIDES RESOURCES--ALL IN ONE PLACE--THAT MAY HELP BOTH PATIENTS AND THEIR DOCTORS TO BETTER DETERMINE WHAT MAY BE CAUSING A STROKE.  LEARN MORE ABOUT "CRYPTOGENIC" STROKE, AT "STROKE-ASSOCIATION"-DOT-ORG.
