(OPEN):
APRIL 5TH THROUGH 11TH IS "NATIONAL PUBLIC HEALTH WEEK"--ORGANIZED
ANNUALLY, BY THE AMERICAN PUBLIC HEALTH ASSOCIATION.
A-P-H-A PRESIDENT, DOCTOR CARMEN NEVAREZ, HAS
MORE...
(NEVAREZ):
"THIS YEAR'S THEME--'A HEALTHIER AMERICA: ONE COMMUNITY AT A
TIME'--FOCUSES ON THE SPECIAL ROLE [THAT] COMMUNITIES PLAY, IN
BUILDING A HEALTHIER NATION. WE'RE ASKING EVERYONE TO CHAMPION
PUBLIC-HEALTH, BY MAKING HEALTHY CHANGES--BOTH BIG AND SMALL--IN THEIR
FAMILIES, NEIGHBORHOODS, WORKPLACES, AND SCHOOLS."
(BRIDGE):
THE ASSOCIATION ALSO RECENTLY CONDUCTED A PUBLIC-OPINION SURVEY, ON
WHAT AMERICANS KNOW ABOUT PUBLIC-HEALTH INITIATIVES. EXECUTIVE
DIRECTOR, DOCTOR GEORGES BENJAMIN, DESCRIBES THE MAIN
FINDINGS...
(BENJAMIN):
"AMERICANS ARE IMPROVING THEIR HEALTH--AND THE HEALTH OF THEIR
COMMUNITIES--TODAY. AND, WHILE THEY KNOW THAT FIXING OUR NATION'S
HEALTH-SYSTEM IS IMPORTANT, THEY ALSO KNOW THAT WASHINGTON CAN'T SOLVE
ALL OF THE PROBLEMS. OUR SURVEY FOUND THAT 64-PERCENT OF AMERICANS
HAVE ALREADY MADE HEALTHY LIFESTYLE-CHANGES. WE ALSO LEARNED THAT
MOST ADULTS WANT TO INSPIRE THEIR CHILDREN TO BE HEALTHY--AND THAT A
MAJORITY HAVE HELPED THEIR FRIENDS OR FAMILY MAKE HEALTH-CHANGES, WITHIN
THE PAST SIX MONTHS. IT'S A GOOD START; BUT, WE CAN--AND WE
MUST--DO MUCH, MUCH MORE: WE HAVE TO MAKE SURE THAT HEALTHY
CHOICES ARE EASY CHOICES--BY ENSURING ACCESS TO COMMUNITY-BASED
SERVICES."
