(JOHNSTON-WALSH):
"THE 'AMERICAN HEALTH-CARE
ACT' WAS WITHDRAWN FROM CONSIDERATION--THANKS, IN PART, TO OPPOSITION FROM CONSUMER-ADVOCATES AND CONCERNED CITIZENS, WHO URGED THEIR REPRESENTATIVES TO THINK OF THE HARM THAT
WOULD'VE BEEN DONE TO REAL PEOPLE. THIS HARMFUL LEGISLATION WOULD'VE ADDED AN
'AGE TAX' ON OLDER AMERICANS--AND WOULD'VE PUT VULNERABLE POPULATIONS AT RISK.
'A-A-R-P' ENCOURAGES CONGRESS TO NOW FOCUS ON THE ISSUES THAT ARE IMPORTANT TO OLDER
AMERICANS--AND THEIR FAMILIES. THESE INCLUDE: PROTECTING AND IMPROVING
MEDICARE'S BENEFITS AND FINANCING; PROVIDING ACCESS TO AFFORDABLE, QUALITY COVERAGE; PREVENTING INSURERS FROM ENGAGING IN DISCRIMINATORY PRACTICES; LOWERING PRESCRIPTION-DRUG COSTS; PROVIDING NEW INCENTIVES TO EXPAND BOTH HOME- AND COMMUNITY-BASED SERVICES; AND STRENGTHENING EFFORTS TO FIGHT FRAUD, WASTE, AND ABUSE.
'A-A-R-P' WILL CONTINUE TO FIGHT ANY LEGISLATION THAT WOULD HIT OLDER AMERICANS WITH HIGHER PRICES AND LESS
COVERAGE--ALONG WITH ANY LEGISLATION THAT WOULD GIVE SWEETHEART-DEALS TO DRUG- AND INSURANCE-COMPANIES, WHILE DOING NOTHING TO LOWER THEIR COSTS."
