(OPEN):
A RECENT A-A-R-P-SURVEY FINDS THAT NEW-MEXICANS AGE 50-PLUS ARE WILLING TO HELP THE STATE RAISE REVENUES--RATHER THAN SEE IMPORTANT SERVICES CUT--BUT HAVE VERY SPECIFIC IDEAS ON HOW THAT SHOULD BE DONE.  STAN COOPER IS A-A-R-P NEW-MEXICO'S STATE-DIRECTOR...

(COOPER):
"THE SURVEY SHOWS THAT NEW-MEXICAN ADULTS AGE 50-PLUS DON'T SUPPORT RAISING GROSS-RECEIPTS TAXES--OR RAIDING THE STATE'S 'RAINY-DAY FUND'.  BUT, 64-PERCENT OF THOSE SURVEYED SAID THEY'D BE AGREEABLE TO INCREASING TAXES ON CIGARETTES AND ALCOHOL.  HOWEVER, INCREASING SO-CALLED 'SIN TAXES' DOESN'T EXTEND TO EVERYDAY FOOD-ITEMS--SUCH AS CANDY, SODA, AND OTHER PROCESSED-GOODS.  A MAJORITY OF ADULTS SURVEYED WOULD ALSO SUPPORT RAISING THE INCOME-TAX ON HOUSEHOLDS THAT EARN MORE THAN 250-THOUSAND DOLLARS, A YEAR.  BUT, ANOTHER 49-PERCENT WOULD OPPOSE INCREASING USER-FEES FOR ITEMS SUCH AS CAR-REGISTRATIONS AND MARRIAGE-LICENSES.
"

(CLOSE):
THE NEW-MEXICO-SURVEY WAS CONDUCTED IN JANUARY--AS PART OF A NATIONAL A-A-R-P-INITIATIVE CALLED "VOICES OF 50-PLUS AMERICA: DREAMS AND CHALLENGES".  TO REVIEW THE SURVEY, VISIT "A-A-R-P"-DOT-ORG-SLASH-"N-M".
