(OPEN):
WITH THE "NEBRASKA LEGISLATURE" NOW BACK IN SESSION, IT SHOULD PASS A BILL THAT WOULD HELP FAMILY-CAREGIVERS WHO CARE FOR AN OLDER PARENT OR OTHER LOVED-ONE--SO THAT THEY CAN LIVE INDEPENDENTLY, IN THEIR OWN HOME.  THAT'S ACCORDING TO MARK INTERMILL--OF "A-A-R-P NEBRASKA"...

(INTERMILL):
"
OUR LATEST SURVEY FOUND THAT REGISTERED-VOTERS WHO ARE 45 OR OLDER STRONGLY SUPPORT THE PROPOSALS IN THE 'ASSISTING CAREGIVER-TRANSITIONS ACT'.  THE BILL WOULD REQUIRE HOSPITALS AND HEALTHCARE-FACILITIES TO BOTH EXPLAIN AND DEMONSTRATE MEDICAL- AND NURSING-TASKS THAT CAREGIVERS WOULD NEED TO PERFORM, AFTER THEIR LOVED-ONE RETURNS HOME.  IT WOULD ALSO REQUIRE THEM TO KEEP A CAREGIVER INFORMED OF MAJOR DECISIONS, LIKE TRANSFERRING OR DISCHARGING THE PATIENT--AND TO RECORD THE NAME OF THEIR CAREGIVER IN THE MEDICAL-RECORD, UPON ADMISSION.  EACH OF THOSE PROPOSALS WAS SUPPORTED BY OVER 80-PERCENT OF OUR RESPONDENTS.  WE ALSO URGE THE LEGISLATURE TO PROVIDE A STATE-INCOME-TAX CREDIT TO CAREGIVERS WHO INCUR EXPENSES FOR THE CARE AND SUPPORT OF AN OLDER FAMILY-MEMBER LIVING WITH THEM.  THAT WAS ALSO SUPPORTED BY MORE THAN 80-PERCENT OF THE RESPONDENTS IN OUR SURVEY."
