WITH THE LEGISLATURE ABOUT TO RETURN TO SESSION,
"A-A-R-P KANSAS" IS URGING LAWMAKERS TO APPROVE AN EXPANSION OF MEDICAID IN THE
STATE--ALSO KNOWN AS "KAN-CARE". DOCTOR MAREN
[AS IN "KAREN"] TURNER IS THE GROUP'S STATE-DIRECTOR...
(TURNER):
"WE STRONGLY URGE THE LEGISLATURE TO EXPAND
'KAN-CARE'; EXPANSION WOULD INCREASE ACCESS FOR THOSE WHO DESPERATELY NEED
IT--AND WOULD SAVE THE STATE MONEY. THIS ISSUE IS PARTICULARLY IMPORTANT TO KANSANS WHO ARE 50 OR OLDER, BUT NOT YET ELIGIBLE FOR MEDICARE:
RESEARCH FROM A-A-R-P'S 'PUBLIC-POLICY INSTITUTE' HAS FOUND THAT EXPANDING
'KAN-CARE' WOULD PROVIDE COVERAGE FOR OVER 20-THOUSAND UNINSURED
KANSANS--AGE-50 TO -64--WHO WERE LIVING AT, OR BELOW, 138-PERCENT OF POVERTY, IN 2010.
OLDER ADULTS ARE PARTICULARLY VULNERABLE TO DETERIORATION IN FUNCTION AND HEALTH-STATUS, IF THEY
DON'T HAVE COVERAGE. AND, THIS PLAN WOULD GIVE THOSE WITHOUT INSURANCE ACCESS TO PREVENTIVE CARE THAT CAN BOTH SAVE LIVES, AND EASE EMERGENCY-ROOM OVERCROWDING THAT HURTS ALL OF US."
