(OPEN):
WITH ILLEGAL "ROBO-CALLS" CONTINUING TO BE A PROBLEM THAT AFFECTS PEOPLE OF ALL AGES, EVEY [LIKE "EVIE"] BELL OWEN--OF "A-A-R-P ALABAMA"--OFFERS THESE TIPS, ON HOW THEY CAN AVOID BEING SCAMMED...

(OWEN):
"
EVEN THOUGH MANY 'ROBO-CALLS' ARE LEGAL, ILLEGAL ONES INCLUDE AUTOMATED SALES-CALLS FROM COMPANIES THAT YOU HAVEN'T AUTHORIZED TO CONTACT YOU--AS WELL AS ATTEMPTS AT OUTRIGHT THEFT.  SCAMMERS OFTEN HIDE A CALL'S TRUE ORIGIN THROUGH WHAT'S CALLED 'SPOOFING'--THAT IS, FAKING THE NUMBER THAT APPEARS IN YOUR 'CALLER I-D', TO MAKE IT SEEM LOCAL.  THAT'S A BIG CONCERN, BECAUSE A RECENT POLL FROM 'A-A-R-P' FINDS THAT ADULTS ARE MORE LIKELY TO ANSWER A CALL THAT'S SEEMINGLY FROM A LOCAL AREA-CODE.  WE URGE ALABAMIANS TO ADD THEIR NUMBERS TO THE 'NATIONAL "DO NOT CALL" REGISTRY'; TO ALWAYS LET CALLS GO TO VOICEMAIL, IF THEY'RE FROM A NUMBER THAT THEY DO NOT KNOW; AND TO NEVER PRESS A BUTTON, OR RESPOND VERBALLY, DURING AN AUTOMATED MESSAGE."

(CLOSE):
OWEN ALSO URGES ALABAMIANS TO VISIT "A-A-R-P"-DOT-ORG-SLASH-"FRAUD-WATCH-NETWORK", FOR MORE TIPS--AND TO LEARN ABOUT THE LATEST SCAMS.
