WITH ELECTION-DAY APPROACHING, MUCH OF THE MEDIA-COVERAGE SHOWS AN
AMERICA THAT'S GREATLY DIVIDED ON ISSUES LIKE IMMIGRATION AND
RELIGIOUS-TOLERANCE. HOWEVER, A RECENT SURVEY FROM THE
FETZER INSTITUTE OFFERS A FRESH AND MORE-NUANCED LOOK.
ACCORDING TO ITS "SURVEY OF LOVE AND FORGIVENESS IN AMERICAN SOCIETY",
NINE IN 10 AMERICANS BELIEVE THAT THE WORLD IS BECOMING MORE FEARFUL AND
VIOLENT; HOWEVER, SIX IN 10 BELIEVE THAT, IF WE BETTER UNDERSTOOD THE
VALUES OF PEOPLE IN OTHER COUNTRIES, THERE WOULD BE LESS CONFLICT.
FETZER INSTITUTE PRESIDENT AND C-E-O, LAWRENCE SULLIVAN,
COMMENTS ON THE FINDINGS...
(SULLIVAN):
"ENCOURAGINGLY, THIS STUDY CONFIRMS THAT WE AMERICANS STRONGLY
DESIRE TO CONNECT WITH THE WIDER WORLD. FOR THE MAJORITY OF
AMERICANS, LEARNING ABOUT OTHER CULTURES IS SEEN AS CREATING THE
POTENTIAL FOR MORE-SIGNIFICANT LOVE, IN THE GLOBAL-COMMUNITY. THE
FETZER INSTITUTE IS INTENSELY INTERESTED IN THE MEANINGS OF LOVE, ACROSS
CULTURES--AND IN THE WAYS THAT THE POWER OF LOVE IS MANIFEST IN THE WORK
OF OUR DAILY LIVES."
(CLOSE):
THE SURVEY ALSO FINDS THAT AT LEAST 90-PERCENT OF AMERICANS DESIRE
MORE-MEANINGFUL LOVE IN THE WORLD--AND MORE FORGIVENESS. FOR MORE
